Parc des Buttes-Chaumont

The name of this park comes from the expression “Chauve Mont”. The literal translation is “bald hill” because there was no vegetation in the area.

The hill where the park itself was built was the main quarry from where the limestones for building the downtown of Paris were extracted. After the french revolution, the place became a dump site of dead animals and sewage. The smell was disgusting.
This park is the first that was made using a design only with curved lines, a revolutionary design against the French standard of that time, the straight lines (like the Tuileries garden for example).
The park has a large lake, waterfalls, and a suspension bridge.

After the death of her husband, she decided to move to the Louvre Palace, and some years after she decided to build in the place a new residence with more beautiful and spacious gardens.
She bought the land space that was occupied at that time by several tile factories for the rooftops of Paris buildings. Tile in French is “Tuile”, and a tuile factory is a “Tuileries”. That’s why we call the garden Jardin des Tuileries.
The design of the garden is dominated by straight lines. Of course, the designer was Italian, from Florence, and the objective was to have an Italian Renaissance Garden. The garden is 500 meters long and 300 hundred meters wide.
Sections were planted with lawns, flower beds, vineyards, and trees. Fountains were placed, as well as several decoration ornaments. A lot of changes and modifications were made to the gardens during many ownership changes during the years until the french revolution.
